Judge Morrison, served as a judge at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, since 2009. He previously served as defence counsel at various international tribunals, including at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (1998-2004), the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (2009) and the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (since 2009), where he was a trial judge in the case of  Radovan Karadžić.


Satvinder Juss

Professor Juss is a human rights expert focusing on policy-oriented work. He contributed as a renowned expert at the invitation of the Home Affairs Committee to a pioneering seminar on Human Trafficking at the Houses of Parliament on 14 May 2009, which brought together the Chairs of all the Home Affairs Committees in Europe, in a new initiative to harmonise standards and procedures in this field. He was also Consultant in April 2009 to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) in a programme funded by the British Embassy in Ankara, Turkey, on issues of expulsion, re-admission and voluntary return of migrants. In 2010, he advised the Government of Bermuda on legislation.

Dr. Yao Li
Senior Research Fellow, Chair for German and International Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and Modern Legal History, Faculty of Law, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin

Yao Li received her law degree from the University of Cologne. She was a Carlo-Schmid-fellow at the ICTY. She worked as a research assistant in International Law and Criminal Law at the Universities of Cologne and Potsdam. Her PhD thesis focuses on Article 1F of the 1951 Refugee Convention and harmonizing interpretation in International Law. Since 2018, she is a senior research fellow at the Chair for German and International Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, and Modern Legal History at Humboldt University Berlin, Germany.

In Exclusion from Protection as a Refugee, Yao Li analyses Article 1F of the 1951 Refugee Convention. She argues that the exclusion clause is a quasi-punitive provision and must therefore be interpreted with due regard to (International) Criminal Law.

Maarten Bolhuis is Assistant Professor in criminology at VU University Amsterdam, focusing on migration related crime. His main research interests are international crimes, terrorism and irregular migration. During his PhD trajectory, Maarten has also gained substantial experience with conducting policy research and teaching. Previously, Maarten has worked in the field of human rights.

Dr Sarah Singer is a Senior Lecturer in Refugee Law at the Refugee Law Initiative, School of Advanced Study, University of London. She is Programme Director of the MA in Refugee Protection and Forced Migration Studies, the first postgraduate distance learning programme of its kind, run by the Refugee Law Initiative and delivered through University of London International Programmes. She also teaches the law component of the MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights at the Human Rights Consortium, School of Advanced Study, University of London. She has published broadly on the topic of asylum seekers and migrants suspected of serious criminality.
